Synopsis

A wandering knight named Lancelot rides into a city that has lived under the Dragon's rule for centuries. He's there to fight the tyrant and free the people — including the young Elsa. But the mayor gives him an honest warning: the townspeople have been shaped by fear so long they no longer know how to be free. The Dragon, played by Yankovsky, cycles through incarnations — warlord, diplomat, something far worse. Every mask fits him perfectly.
Schwartz finished the play in 1944 and Soviet censors buried it immediately. Zakharov put it on screen in 1988, at the height of glasnost, and audiences had no trouble reading the allegory: the dragon doesn't only rule from the outside — it takes root in the people it's spent generations breaking.
