Synopsis

Count Cagliostro tours Russia in the 1780s and finds himself stranded at a remote provincial estate. The young heir, Aleksei Fedyashev, has one obsession: a marble statue he has fallen in love with. He wants the famous magician to bring her to life. Then a real young woman named Masha arrives, and the statue quickly loses its appeal. Zakharov — who ran Moscow's Lenkom Theatre for decades — built the film around a deceptively simple idea: real feeling needs no formula and no sorcery.
