Synopsis
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) — watch online on iFILM this Studio Ghibli war drama directed by Isao Takahata. The film is based on Akiyuki Nosaka's 1967 novella, written as a personal act of atonement toward his younger sister, who died of malnutrition during the final months of World War II.
Kobe, summer 1945. Incendiary bombs have levelled the city. Fourteen-year-old Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko lose their mother in the attacks. A distant aunt takes them in — then makes clear she barely tolerates the arrangement. Seita pulls Setsuko out and sets up a home in an abandoned hillside shelter near a pond. They catch fireflies and seal them in a candy tin for light. Food runs out. Seita is too proud, too young, and too determined to ask for help. The film watches, quietly, as each small decision narrows their options.
Released the same day as My Neighbor Totoro as a double bill — Ghibli's deliberate pairing of childhood joy and childhood grief — the film has never once softened with age. Takahata built no heroes and offered no resolution, only the specific weight of two children in the wrong place at the wrong time. Stream Grave of the Fireflies (1988) on iFILM.
