The White Tiger

The White Tiger (2021) is Ramin Bahrani's social drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. A driver from a dirt-poor village talks his way into a wealthy household and narrates his own climb out of the bottom, in a wry, needling voice-over that never lets you off the hook.

Balram (a breakout Adarsh Gourav) was born into a caste almost no one escapes. He lands a job chauffeuring Ashok (Rajkummar Rao), a young heir freshly back from America, and his wife Pinky (Priyanka Chopra), full of liberal talk that doesn't survive contact with old money. Then a drunken hit-and-run changes everything, and his employers prepare to pin a stranger's death on the help. Balram realizes that loyalty here is just a cage, and decides to break out at any cost.

Bahrani adapted Aravind Adiga's Booker Prize-winning novel, and the screenplay went on to land an Oscar nomination. This is a sharp, funny demolition of the bootstrap fairy tale, a story about what it actually costs to jump from one India into another. Gourav carries it on charm and cold calculation at once.
