Synopsis

The Joy Luck Club (1993) is a drama directed by Wayne Wang that you can watch online on iFILM. In San Francisco, four Chinese immigrant women have been meeting for mahjong for years. Their American-born daughters barely know who those women were before they crossed the ocean.

The film unfolds in eight interlocking stories — each mother and each daughter gets her own chapter. The flashbacks reach back into 1930s and 1940s China: forced marriages, wartime loss, and the kind of hardship nobody talks about at the dinner table. Ming-Na Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, Lauren Tom and Rosalind Chao play the daughters slowly piecing it together. Tsai Chin, Lisa Lu and France Nuyen carry the weight of the mothers' half. It is a film about what gets passed down in silence and what it costs when that silence finally breaks.

Amy Tan wrote the screenplay herself alongside Ronald Bass, adapting her 1989 bestselling novel; Oliver Stone produced. The cast is almost entirely Asian-American — at the time, a rare thing for a Hollywood studio production. Stream The Joy Luck Club (1993) on iFILM.
