The film opens on a half-starved boy whose actress mother could barely keep food on the table. From there it tracks the music-hall stages, the boat to America, and the moment a baggy suit, a cane and a bowler hat turned into the Little Tramp. Downey carries Chaplin across decades: the early studios, runaway success, a string of marriages, and an FBI vendetta that eventually pushed him into Swiss exile. Geraldine Chaplin plays her own grandmother, alongside Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Kline, Dan Aykroyd and a young Milla Jovovich.
