Why the loop hooks you

The thrill of watching. Along with the hero we memorize details, look for patterns, wait for them to finally wise up. Groundhog Day invented the formula: an endless day as a maturity gym — a cynic relives one day so many times he cannot help becoming human. Edge of Tomorrow turns the same device into a video game that reloads after each death, and it is unexpectedly fun.

Where to start

Never seen the genre? Groundhog Day, no question: everything else grew out of it. Love action? Edge of Tomorrow, smart and kinetic. Want horror with humor? How it works

A good loop is not repetition for its own sake but progression: each cycle the hero knows a little more, and so do we.
