Near Dark

Near Dark (1987) is Kathryn Bigelow's vampire western, ready to watch online on iFILM. A farm boy meets a strange girl on a small-town Texas street, kisses her, and by sunrise discovers he's caught something that makes daylight burn his skin.

Caleb is dragged into a roaming pack of vampires who tear across the highways in stolen cars. They sleep off the day in cheap motels with the windows taped shut, then hunt after dark. To earn a place in the family he's ordered to make his first kill, and he can't bring himself to do it. Lance Henriksen plays the pack leader Jesse, Bill Paxton the gleeful psychopath Severen, and the roadhouse bar massacre they stage has become one of the most quoted scenes in horror.

Two years before Point Break, Bigelow took the same cast spine she'd worked with on James Cameron's Aliens and built a vampire myth that never once says the word "vampire" — just dust, neon and a Tangerine Dream score.
