Synopsis
Spartacus (2004) is a US television epic you can watch online on iFILM. Croatian actor Goran Višnjić plays the Thracian slave who in 73 B.C. walked out of a gladiator training camp near Mount Vesuvius with a handful of men and kept walking until the escaped had become an army. Director Robert Dornhelm shoots the film as a grim procedural — less sword spectacle, more the exhausting arithmetic of a rebellion with nowhere to go.
The insurgent force eventually swells past one hundred thousand, moving through Italy without a country to claim or a port willing to take them in. Crassus — Angus MacFadyen — takes the assignment to crush them personally, and the film is smart enough to make him a credible opponent rather than a cartoon villain. Alan Bates and Rhona Mitra round out a strong ensemble.
At 174 minutes it has room to breathe, and it uses that space to show what the rebellion cost the people who believed in it — not just what it achieved. That weight sets this Spartacus apart from the sword-and-sandal genre it nominally belongs to. Stream Spartacus (2004) online on iFILM.
