About

Synopsis

The Passion of the Christ (2004) is Mel Gibson's religious drama, available to watch online on iFILM. The film traces, hour by hour, the final twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

It opens in the garden of Gethsemane on the night of the arrest, then follows the trial, the scourging and the long walk to Golgotha. Gibson shot the whole thing in Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew with subtitles, so the voices would sound the way they might have back then. James Caviezel plays Jesus, Maia Morgenstern his mother, and Monica Bellucci appears as Mary Magdalene.

The picture proved both divisive and a box-office giant. Its unflinching focus on physical suffering set off heated debate across the globe. Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel framed shots after the paintings of Caravaggio, while composer John Debney wrote a choral score that took on a life of its own beyond the screen.
