Shot almost entirely on studio interiors in Britain, the film runs on Davis's close-ups: every line lands like a well-placed blade, every entrance a small act of dominance. Gary Merrill, who played her unwelcome houseguest, was Davis's real-life husband at the time — and whatever tension existed between them off set, it reads as entirely genuine on screen.
