Synopsis
Blood Simple (1985) is a crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. It marks the feature debut of Joel and Ethan Coen, shot on a shoestring deep in rural Texas. When sleazy bar owner Marty learns that his wife Abby is sleeping with his bartender Ray, he hires a private detective to kill them both.
The detective, played by M. Emmet Walsh as a sweaty, grinning opportunist, treats the job as a chance to run his own scam instead. From there nothing goes as planned. Each character sees only a sliver of what happened and guesses the rest wrong, which drags everyone deeper. Frances McDormand makes her screen debut as Abby, with Dan Hedaya as Marty, neither of them aware of how badly the lies have piled up.
Barry Sonnenfeld shot the film and Carter Burwell scored it, both starting long careers alongside the Coens here. The title comes from a Dashiell Hammett novel, his phrase for the panic that grips a person after a killing. Nearly everything the brothers built later traces back to this one.
