One thing he never planned for: his wife fights back, and her lover, a writer of crime novels, knows exactly how a perfect murder is supposed to fall apart. What follows is a slow chess match with a sharp-eyed inspector as the evidence keeps switching sides.

Adapted from Frederick Knott's stage play, the film barely leaves a single London flat, leaning on a telephone, a latchkey and a pair of scissors instead of action.
