Synopsis
Lady Macbeth (2016) is William Oldroyd's stark period drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Northern England, 1865. Nineteen-year-old Katherine has been sold into a marriage the way you'd sell off a piece of land.
In one of her earliest leading roles, Florence Pugh plays a young wife shut inside a cold house between a husband who won't touch her and a father-in-law who rules by fear. Her days drain away in empty rooms under other people's rules. When the men leave the estate, she falls for Sebastian, a farmhand, and wants something for the first time in her life. The trouble is what she'll do to keep it, and the cost stops being measured in insults and starts being measured in bodies.
The script transplants Nikolai Leskov's Russian novella to the Victorian moors. Oldroyd keeps the camera still and the soundtrack nearly silent, which makes the cruelty land that much harder. It's for viewers who like watching the so-called victim turn out to be the most frightening person in the room. Stream Lady Macbeth (2016) online on iFILM.
