Synopsis

A Man for All Seasons (1966) is Fred Zinnemann's historical drama, which you can watch online on iFILM. Tudor England, and Henry VIII wants a divorce Rome won't grant him. So he breaks with the Pope and remakes the church to suit his second marriage.

One man stands in the way: Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor, lawyer, philosopher, and the most stubborn conscience in the realm. Paul Scofield plays him and took home the Best Actor Oscar for it. All the crown asks is a signature swearing that the king now heads the English church. More says nothing, sheltering behind the letter of the law, and that silence slowly turns deadly. Around him: Robert Shaw as the hot-tempered Henry, Orson Welles as Cardinal Wolsey, and a young John Hurt on the make.

The film swept six Academy Awards, picking up the directing prize and Best Picture, and it's still a model for turning near-theatrical dialogue into gripping cinema. At heart it asks what a principle is worth, told through a man who chose the block over a lie. Stream A Man for All Seasons (1966) online on iFILM.
