Synopsis
From Here to Eternity (1953) is Fred Zinnemann's military melodrama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Hawaii, the summer of 1941, an Army base counting down to a war nobody sees coming. Private Prewitt won't box for his company team, and the brass make him pay for it.
Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) was a fine fighter until he blinded a friend in a sparring match, so now he refuses the ring no matter what Captain Holmes throws at him. While Prewitt holds the line, tough Sergeant Warden (Burt Lancaster) starts an affair with the captain's wife, Karen, played by Deborah Kerr. Their friend Maggio, a small, big-hearted Frank Sinatra, falls into the hands of a sadistic stockade sergeant. Pearl Harbor is days away, and none of them know it.
Zinnemann's film swept eight Oscars, Best Picture among them, and the shot of Lancaster and Kerr kissing in the surf is one of Hollywood's most copied images. Sinatra, without singing a note, walked away with the Supporting Actor prize and rebuilt his career on it. This is a hard, grown-up story about a system that grinds men down one at a time.
