Synopsis
Anna and the King (1999) is a historical romance you can watch online on iFILM. Director Andy Tennant put Jodie Foster opposite Chow Yun-Fat and set their story in the Siam of the 1860s.
Widowed English teacher Anna Leonowens arrives at court with her young son to tutor the many children of King Mongkut. Two worlds collide from day one: a blunt, stubborn governess raised on Victorian manners, and a ruler unused to a woman who talks back to his face. Their arguments over custom slowly soften into a guarded closeness. Meanwhile a military threat builds around the throne, with neighbors and schemers ready to exploit the kingdom's weakness, and Anna and the king find themselves on the same side. Bai Ling appears as the concubine Tuptim, whose fate strips the lighter mood out of the tale.
The film draws on the real Anna Leonowens and picked up two Oscar nominations, for art direction and costume design. Shot across Malaysia, it makes the scale of palaces and court ceremony feel almost tangible. A good fit for anyone who loves period drama anchored by a strong central pair.
