Synopsis
Where Eagles Dare (1968) is a World War II action-adventure you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Brian G. Hutton from Alistair MacLean's novel, it drops a small commando team behind enemy lines to pull a captured American general out of a near-impregnable Alpine fortress crawling with SS.
Major Smith (Richard Burton) leads the squad, and one man clearly doesn't belong: a cool, plainspoken American Ranger named Schaffer (Clint Eastwood). When the first soldier dies right after the parachute drop, Schaffer starts to suspect the rescue is only a cover, and the real job is far dirtier. From there it's cable cars swinging over a sheer drop, double agents, endless Wehrmacht disguises, and a climax where nobody's sure who's actually working for whom.
MacLean wrote the screenplay straight for the screen rather than adapting a finished book, and you can feel it in the runaway pace of the back half. Burton handles the scheming; Eastwood handles the machine gun, burning through enough ammo to supply a small army. It's a textbook slice of late-sixties guys-on-a-mission cinema for anyone who loves the old war capers. Stream Where Eagles Dare (1968) online on iFILM.
