Synopsis
Stay Alive (2006) is William Brent Bell's supernatural horror you can watch online on iFILM. After a friend dies under strange circumstances, a group of New Orleans gamers ends up with an unreleased video game of the same name. They sit down to play it.
The game draws on the legend of the Blood Countess, a 17th-century noblewoman who bathed in the blood of young girls to stay youthful. At first it just feels like a moody scare. Then the players notice the pattern: whoever dies in the game soon dies in real life, killed the exact way their character was. Sophia Bush, Frankie Muniz, Milo Ventimiglia and Jon Foster play the friends scrambling to crack the Countess's rules before she reaches them. The line between screen and reality keeps thinning.
The film fuses the teen slasher that was everywhere in the 2000s with a cursed-video-game hook. Grounding it in the real history of Elizabeth Bathory gives the horror a darker spine than expected.
