Synopsis
The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher, 2007) is Stefan Ruzowitzky's war drama, free to watch online on iFILM. Salomon Sorowitsch is the sharpest banknote forger in 1930s Berlin — until the Nazis lock him up and then put his gift to monstrous use.
Inside Sachsenhausen, the Gestapo assembles an odd crew of Jewish prisoners: painters, printers, engravers. The job is to manufacture flawless pounds and dollars and quietly wreck the enemy economy from within. Sorowitsch, played with cold precision by Karl Markovics, lives by one rule — stay useful, stay alive. Adolf Burger (August Diehl) sees it differently and would rather sabotage the whole press than help the Reich. A single mistake gets the entire barrack shot.
Built around the real Operation Bernhard, the film skips heroics for a quieter, uglier question: what your conscience costs when warm food and survival hang on every perfect forgery.
