Synopsis
Amen. (2002) is a German-French historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Costa-Gavras adapted Rolf Hochhuth's stage play The Deputy — a cold-eyed account of complicity, conscience, and institutional silence.
It is August 1942. SS officer Kurt Gerstein, a sanitation specialist, realizes that the gas developed by his unit is being deployed to kill prisoners on an industrial scale. He tries to reach anyone who will listen. Young Jesuit priest Riccardo Fontana believes the Vatican must speak out — and joins Gerstein in pressing the case. Every door they approach closes. Ulrich Tukur carries Gerstein's fractured conscience through 132 minutes without breaking into sentiment. Mathieu Kassovitz plays Fontana as a man whose faith collides with the machinery of power.
Costa-Gavras frames the film almost like testimony — no swelling score, no cathartic moments engineered for the camera. The restraint is the point. Watch Amen. (2002) online on iFILM.
