Synopsis
Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) is Louis Malle's quiet wartime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A boarding school in occupied France, winter term, and a new boy the headmaster keeps oddly close.
Julien Quentin is a sharp, privileged twelve-year-old who first treats the newcomer as a rival. Jean Bonnet keeps to himself, plays piano beautifully, and guards a secret. The friendship builds slowly — through schoolyard fights, shared books by flashlight, a stolen trip into the woods — until Julien works out who Jean really is and why the Catholic priests are hiding him under a false name while German patrols circle the town.
Malle drew the story straight from his own childhood; he was a pupil at such a school and never forgot the raid that followed. That memory shows in the restraint: no swelling music, no speeches, just a camera that watches and lets the dread land on its own. The film won the Golden Lion at Venice and swept seven César Awards. If you want precise, unsentimental cinema about boyhood and conscience, this is it. Stream Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) online on iFILM.
