Synopsis

Lions for Lambs (2007) is Robert Redford's political drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Redford directs and takes a lead role, sharing the screen with Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise.

The film runs three threads in near real time across ninety taut minutes. In Washington, an ambitious senator lays out a fresh plan to win in Afghanistan to a wary television reporter. In California, a political science professor tries to shake a gifted but checked-out student awake. And on a snowy Afghan ridge, two of that professor's former students, now volunteers, lie pinned under Taliban fire, waiting for a rescue that may arrive too late. Three conversations, one question: who actually pays for the talk.

Redford keeps it small and verbal, more debate than battlefield, and that's the gamble. What carries it is the discomfort it aims straight at the audience: it's easy to theorize about war from a warm office. For viewers who like a movie that argues with them instead of lulling them.
