About

Synopsis

World Trade Center (2006) is Oliver Stone's drama about the events of September 11 — watch it online on iFILM. Port Authority sergeant John McLoughlin and officer Will Jimeno were part of the first wave sent into the South Tower to help evacuate civilians. The building came down on top of them. They survived the collapse. They were buried under tons of debris in total darkness.

Nicolas Cage plays McLoughlin. Michael Peña plays Jimeno. Most of the film takes place in the rubble — two men talking to stay conscious, about their wives, their kids, the pain in their legs, whether to keep calling out or save the air. Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal play the women waiting outside who don't know if their husbands are alive.

Stone stripped out politics and spectacle entirely. The result is a survival film built on two performances and near-complete darkness. The real Will Jimeno served as a consultant on the production; both men were pulled from the wreckage roughly thirteen hours after the collapse by a Marine veteran who went looking on his own.
