High in the Afghan mountains, four Navy SEALs set out to track down a Taliban commander. A group of goat herders stumbles onto their position, and the men face an impossible call: silence the civilians or let them go and risk being hunted. They let them go. Within the hour they are pinned to a ridge by dozens of fighters, low on ammunition and cut off from any help. What follows is a brutal firefight, then the lone escape of a wounded Marcus Luttrell, who is sheltered by a villager named Gulab bound by an old code of hospitality.

Berg built the film from Luttrell's own account of the raid in Kunar province, where his recon team suffered one of the heaviest losses in SEAL history.
