Synopsis
The Death & Life of John F. Donovan (2019) is Xavier Dolan's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A decade after an American TV star dies, a young actor digs out the letters they once traded and tries to reckon with what that correspondence did to both of them.
Kit Harington plays Donovan, a heartthrob from a hit show who has everything except a single person who actually listens. His one honest connection is an eleven-year-old fan in London named Rupert. When their private letters leak, the carefully managed career starts to come apart — fame forgives an ordinary man for things it will never forgive an idol. The cast around Harington includes Natalie Portman, Jacob Tremblay, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates and Michael Gambon.
This was Dolan's first film in English, and it lands softer and more sentimental than his early work. What survives is the thing his fans come for: the ache of loneliness and the hunger to be seen. Best for viewers who love Dolan for his tone rather than tidy plotting. Stream The Death & Life of John F. Donovan (2019) online on iFILM.
