Synopsis
The Bling Ring (2013) is Sofia Coppola's crime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It grew out of what actually happened around Los Angeles in the late 2000s, when a clique of bored teenagers started looting the homes of famous people.
The kids track which celebrity is out of town through gossip sites and social posts, then simply walk into the empty mansions. The closets of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and others become a free shopping spree. Awkward Marc gets pulled in by the pushy Rebecca (Katie Chang), with Nicki, played by Emma Watson, and her friends treating stolen bags and heels as trophies worth more than any risk. The bigger the haul, the louder they want to brag about it.
Coppola skips the chase and instead paints a portrait of a generation raised on other people's wealth and online clout. Cold gloss, neon storefronts, a soundtrack standing in for any moral.
