He waits tables at a SoHo diner by day and works on Superbia by night — the musical he has chased for eight years, and the one big workshop that could change everything is almost here. One song still won't come. His girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp) is tired of waiting on someone else's dream and may leave the city. His closest friend Michael walked away from acting for a steady ad-agency paycheck. And a ticking sound only Jon can hear keeps getting louder.
The man behind the story is real: Jonathan Larson, who wrote the rock musical Rent and died the night before its first preview, never seeing it become a phenomenon. Miranda adapts Larson's own autobiographical show into a love letter to broke artists who refuse to quit. Garfield learned to sing from scratch for the part and earned an Oscar nomination for it.
