Synopsis

Mommy (2014) is Xavier Dolan's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A widowed mother named Diane pulls her volatile teenage son out of an institution and decides to raise him herself. The love is there. The calm is not.

Steve swings from tenderness to violence in seconds — a laugh, then a scream, then a smashed kitchen. Diane works herself ragged, sinks into debt, and refuses to give up on him. Help arrives from across the street: Kyla, a teacher on leave who can barely finish a sentence because of her own stutter. Together the three of them build a fragile little routine full of music, jokes and hope. How long it lasts is the open question.

Dolan shot the film in a rare square 1:1 frame that physically widens whenever his characters get room to breathe. The movie shared the Jury Prize at Cannes and cemented the 25-year-old director as one of the boldest voices of his generation. Anne Dorval, Antoine-Olivier Pilon and Suzanne Clément carry every raw minute of it. Stream Mommy (2014) online on iFILM.
