Synopsis

A Civil Action (1998) is Steven Zaillian's legal drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It comes from a true case: contaminated tap water in Woburn, Massachusetts, where one child after another was diagnosed with leukemia.

Jan Schlichtmann, played by John Travolta, is a slick personal-injury lawyer who only takes cases that pay easily. He first writes off the families' suit against two corporations as a loser, then smells millions in it and dives in headfirst. The case swallows him whole, until he's wagering his firm, his clients, and his own savings against a defense led by the unflappable Jerome Facher. That role landed Robert Duvall an Oscar nomination. Watch for William H. Macy, Tony Shalhoub, and James Gandolfini in support.

This is no feel-good tale of a noble attorney. The film is blunt about how justice runs into money, and the ending refuses to comfort you. If you like dogged courtroom dramas in the vein of Erin Brockovich, it hits hard. Stream A Civil Action (1998) online on iFILM.
