Synopsis

The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (Vynález zkázy, 1958) is Karel Zeman's adventure fantasy after Jules Verne, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Professor Roch, the one man who understands a substance of terrifying destructive power, is seized by pirates.

Taken with him is his assistant, Simon Hart, and it falls to Hart to unravel a scheme aimed at ruling the world. The chase runs from a submarine to a fortified island, through escapes, captures and gloriously improbable machines straight out of Victorian dreams of tomorrow.

What stays with you isn't the plot but the look. Zeman fused live actors with animation, models and cross-hatched engraving, so every frame resembles a steel-plate illustration from an old Verne edition come to life.
