Synopsis
Pather Panchali (1955) is Satyajit Ray's debut feature, and you can watch this landmark of world cinema online on iFILM. It opens the celebrated Apu Trilogy, following a boy named Apu growing up in a poor village in rural Bengal. Ray shot it across years, on borrowed money, with mostly first-time actors.
Apu's father Harihar, a priest with stalled dreams of writing, leaves for the city to find work and stays gone far too long. His mother Sarbojaya holds the household together alone — a frail elderly aunt, Indir, a willful daughter, Durga, and an endless shortage of money under the eyes of sharp-tongued neighbors. Meanwhile the children chase their own small joys: racing through a field of feathery grass to glimpse a passing train, standing out in the first monsoon rain, sneaking fruit from someone else's orchard. Tiny wonders and quiet grief sit side by side, with no melodrama pushing them.
Scored by a young Ravi Shankar, the film took the Best Human Document prize at Cannes and effectively launched modern Indian art cinema. It is slow, hushed and deeply observed — made for viewers who'll trade plot twists for patient, tender watching. Stream Pather Panchali (1955) online on iFILM.
