Synopsis

Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) is a quiet American drama you can watch online on iFILM. Danish director Susanne Bier — known for "After the Wedding," which earned her an Academy Award nomination — brought her understated, close-quarters style to this story of two broken people piecing themselves back together.

Audrey (Halle Berry) is a widow a few weeks out from burying her husband. She invites his oldest friend Jerry (Benicio del Toro), a former lawyer grinding through heroin addiction, to move into her spare room. Her kids don't know what to make of him. Jerry barely knows what to make of himself — meetings, cravings, one day at a time. What neither of them expects is to find, in the other's grief, something that actually helps. David Duchovny plays the husband in flashbacks, grounding the loss in something specific rather than abstract.

The film leans on its two leads almost entirely, and del Toro in particular carries scenes that could have collapsed into melodrama. Stream Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) online on iFILM.
