Synopsis
Iron & Blood: The Legend of Taras Bulba (2009) is a Russian historical epic you can watch online on iFILM. Director Vladimir Bortko adapted Gogol's 1835 novella with Bogdan Stupka in the title role — a Ukrainian stage legend playing the most Ukrainian of heroes, in what became one of the most expensive Russian productions of the 2000s.
Set in 16th-century Ukraine, the story follows Zaporozhian Cossack leader Taras Bulba, who brings his two sons into the war against the Polish nobility. His younger son Andrei falls for a Polish woman during her city's siege and quietly crosses to the other side. Igor Petrenko plays the defecting son in a way that makes the choice feel genuinely hard.
What follows is the core of Gogol's tragedy: a father with no capacity for nuance deciding what loyalty costs. The battle sequences are large-scale, the period detail is serious, and the family drama cuts cold by the end. Stream Iron & Blood: The Legend of Taras Bulba (2009) online on iFILM.
