Synopsis
The Pilot: A Battle for Survival (Lyotchik, 2021) is a Russian war drama you can watch online on iFILM. December 1941, a German tank column is pushing toward Moscow. Nikolai Komlev's Il-2 ground-attack plane breaks the advance, but enemy fighters shoot him down and he crash-lands the burning aircraft in a frozen forest clearing far behind the front.
The dogfight turns out to be the easy part. Wounded, starving, and stuck in thirty-below cold, Komlev sets out on foot toward friendly lines, a journey that drags on for days. Wolves trail his scent and a Nazi detachment has orders to find the pilot at any cost. One thing keeps him moving — the thought of Olga waiting at home. Pyotr Fyodorov plays a man worn down to nothing, Anna Peskova the woman worth crawling back for.
Director Renat Davletyarov draws on the real ordeals of Soviet airmen who survived winter crashes in 1941 and 1942. He keeps the focus off big battle set-pieces and on a lone duel against frost, pain and fear. A solid pick if you like harsh survival stories and war films without parade-ground bombast.
