Hadewijch

Hadewijch (2009) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM. Celine, a theology student, has pushed her devotion past the point a convent will tolerate — she fasts to exhaustion, shuns comfort, and reaches for the absolute. The nuns send her away.

Back in Paris, she falls in with Nassir and his circle of orthodox Muslims. One form of total belief recognizes another. Directed by Bruno Dumont in his characteristically sparse, near-silent style, the film asks what happens when faith and radicalism become indistinguishable. Julie Sokolowski carries the lead performance almost wordlessly. It is not an easy film to sit with — and that is precisely the intention.
