Synopsis

The Last Duel (2021) is Ridley Scott's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In the final years of 14th-century France, a knight named Jean de Carrouges demands the right to settle a score with a sword.

The charge is brutal. Carrouges' wife, Marguerite, accuses his former friend, the squire Jacques Le Gris, of rape. There are no witnesses, only her word against his. King Charles VI orders trial by combat, and the rules are merciless: if the knight loses, his wife burns for false testimony. The film tells the same events three times, from three points of view: Carrouges (Matt Damon), Le Gris (Adam Driver) and Marguerite herself (Jodie Comer). Each retelling reshapes what came before.

Damon, Ben Affleck (who also plays the dissolute Count Pierre) and Nicole Holofcener wrote the screenplay from Eric Jager's nonfiction account of an actual 1386 lawsuit. Scott shoots the closing fight stripped of all tournament glamour, all mud and panic and breaking bone. The story takes the chivalric legend apart and asks whose testimony a society chooses to believe. Stream The Last Duel (2021) online on iFILM.
