Synopsis

Hangover Square (1945) is a gothic thriller you can watch online on iFILM. In Edwardian London, composer George Harvey Bone is laboring over a piano concerto, but discordant sounds and flashes of rage send him into blackouts. He comes to across town with no memory of the lost hours — and reads about a fresh murder in the morning papers.

A doctor urges him to relax, which is how Bone falls under the spell of cabaret singer Netta. He abandons his concerto to write cheap songs for her; she simply uses him while taking up with another man. Jealousy, humiliation and those black gaps in his mind close in together, and you grasp where it's heading before he does. Laird Cregar plays Bone as a soft-spoken giant being crushed from within, with Linda Darnell and a deliciously caustic George Sanders beside him.

Director John Brahm turns it into pure horror-noir, and Bernard Herrmann's celebrated "Concerto Macabre" carries the blazing finale. It was Cregar's last role — he died soon after filming, only 31. This is lean, brooding classic-era dread for fans of vintage horror and a great score. Stream Hangover Square (1945) online on iFILM.
