What changes his mind is Marie, a broke and sharp-tongued lounge singer who slips into his orbit and won't slip out. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall share the screen for the first time here, and their back-and-forth carries the picture. Walter Brennan, as the rummy old deckhand Eddie, keeps it from turning cold.

This is the set where a nineteen-year-old Bacall delivered the famous "just put your lips together and blow" line, and the on-screen heat became an off-screen marriage.
