The brothers share a practice, a reputation and their women. Smooth-talking Elliot seduces patients, then passes them along to the shy Beverly once he's bored — and none of them realize they've been handed off. The arrangement runs flawlessly until actress Claire walks into the clinic. Beverly falls for her, hard, and for the first time the twins want something they can't divide. From there it slides into jealousy, drugs and a slow unraveling of the mind.

Cronenberg builds the film on a cold, surgical look and an uneasy score — disturbing instruments, sterile rooms, the body rendered alien.
