Synopsis
In the Heat of the Sun (1994) is a Chinese coming-of-age drama you can watch online on iFILM. Beijing, early 1970s: with the Cultural Revolution sending most adults off to the provinces, a pack of teenagers owns the half-empty streets.
Fourteen-year-old Ma Xiaojun and his friends drift through courtyards, pick locks for fun, stumble into brawls, and run headlong into the one puzzle they can't solve — girls. The narrator's memory keeps slipping, scenes contradict each other, and the film openly admits that some of this summer may be invented. As Ma, Xia Yu took the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at Venice.
Jiang Wen's directing debut, adapted from a novella by Wang Shuo, drenches a grim decade in warm, golden light — which is exactly what the original title, Bright Sunny Days, promises. It's for viewers who want intimate, sensory cinema about how we remember, not a history lesson. Stream In the Heat of the Sun (1994) online on iFILM.
