Synopsis
The Wild Boys (Les Garçons sauvages, 2017) is a French fantasy you can watch online on iFILM, the debut feature of Bertrand Mandico. Five privileged teenagers commit a brutal crime, and a Dutch captain hauls them off on his battered sailing ship for a punishing voyage.
The ship heads for a strange island where the plants ooze and the ground itself reshapes anyone who touches it. The boys, notably, are played by five actresses — a trick that turns the film into a fever dream about bodies, desire and transformation. Mandico shot on 16mm, runs most of it in black and white, then lets color burst through; the result lands somewhere between a 19th-century adventure tale and a hallucination.
This first feature built a cult among fans of out-there art cinema and draws frequent comparisons to early Guy Maddin. Fair warning: if you need a clean plot, this isn't it. Everyone else gets one of the decade's oddest debuts. Stream The Wild Boys (2017) online on iFILM.
