Synopsis
Life Is a Long Quiet River (La vie est un long fleuve tranquille, 1988) is a French comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Twelve years ago a spiteful nurse swapped two newborns at the maternity ward. Now the truth surfaces, and two families who should never have met are forced into each other's lives.
On one side sit the well-off, churchgoing Le Quesnoys, whose children are models of good manners. On the other, the loud, perpetually broke Groseille clan — short on food, long on laughter. With the boys revealed as switched, both households must take in the child who is biologically theirs, and every comfortable routine starts to crack. This was Étienne Chatiliez's first feature, and it put a teenage Benoît Magimel on the map while turning the name "Quesnoy" into French shorthand for prim bourgeois hypocrisy. The satire bites, but kindly — snobs and chancers get skewered in equal measure. If you like French class-clash comedy that's sharp without turning cruel, this one delivers.
