About

Synopsis

Tanguy (2001) is Étienne Chatiliez's French comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Tanguy Guetz is twenty-eight, charming and brilliant. He speaks fluent Chinese, dates effortlessly, works on a doctorate, and shows zero intention of ever moving out of his parents' apartment.

Years ago, Paul and Édith cooed to their baby that he could stay home forever. That throwaway line has come back to haunt them. Worn down by a grown son who won't leave, they cook up a scheme: make life under their roof so miserable that Tanguy flees on his own. Sabine Azéma and André Dussollier play the parents who slowly slide from doting to nearly cruel, while Éric Berger's Tanguy refuses, cheerfully, to take the hint.

Chatiliez, the director of Life Is a Long Quiet River, pushes the domestic warfare into absurdity with his trademark mean tenderness. The film struck such a nerve that "Tanguy" became French slang for an adult kid who won't leave home. A great pick for anyone who enjoys sharp French comedy about family.
