Synopsis

The Onion Movie (2008) is the satirical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, built around the fake-news format that made The Onion a cultural institution. Directed by Tom Kuntz and Mike Maguire, the film packages absurdist sketches as a straight-faced broadcast from America's finest news source.

Anchor Norm Archer delivers headlines with total conviction: a car manufacturer recalls vehicles over lethal "Neckbelts," researchers confirm that depression hits losers the hardest, and celebrity profiles reveal things no publicist would sanction. Steven Seagal shows up to parody his own action-hero persona in the extended "Cockpuncher" segment, which runs long enough to feel like a film within a film. The humor swings at terrorism, gun culture, obesity panic, racism, and Hollywood in roughly equal measure.

Shot between 2003 and 2007 but held back until a straight-to-video release in 2008, the movie arrived just as fake-news satire was shifting from print to online video. Whether it lands depends entirely on your tolerance for commitment-to-bit absurdism. Watch The Onion Movie online on iFILM.
