Synopsis

The Fly (1958) is a science-fiction horror you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Kurt Neumann. Scientist André Delambre builds a machine that can teleport matter, and one night he decides to step inside it himself.

A common housefly slips into the chamber with him. The device scrambles their atoms, and André emerges with an insect's head and claw, while a tiny creature bearing a human face buzzes loose somewhere in the house. Catching it is his only chance to reverse the change before his mind is gone for good. The tale comes to us through his wife Helene, who opens the film by confessing she killed him, then walks the police back through how it all ended under a hydraulic press. Vincent Price plays André's brother, and his closing scene at the spiderweb has haunted viewers for decades.

Adapted from George Langelaan's short story, the picture hides a surprisingly mournful tragedy about the cost of scientific pride beneath its modest fifties production. Cronenberg would remake it in 1986, but this original, with its tiny pleading "Help me!", is the one that became a cult touchstone. Fans of vintage sci-fi and slow-burn dread will find plenty here.
