On that birthday, citizens are sent to "renewal," a glittering ceremony that quietly ends in their destruction. Anyone who runs becomes prey for the Sandmen. Logan-5 (Michael York) is one of those hunters, until the system marks his own clock short and orders him undercover to find a rumored refuge called Sanctuary. Jenny Agutter plays Jessica, the woman who makes him question everything he once enforced, with Peter Ustinov turning up as a cat-loving old man living far outside the dome.

The film took home a special Academy Award for its visual effects — lasers, holograms and miniature cityscapes that felt like a leap forward a year before Star Wars arrived.
