

Synopsis
1984 (1956) — watch online on iFILM — is the first major screen adaptation of George Orwell's novel, a British-American dystopia directed by Michael Anderson. Edmond O'Brien plays Winston Smith, a low-ranking functionary at the Ministry of Truth whose job is to rewrite newspaper archives so that history matches whatever the Party currently claims it to be. Big Brother is always watching.
Winston knows independent thought is a crime. He commits it anyway. A secret diary. Then Julia, played by Jan Sterling — a colleague who slips him a note that says "I love you" and means it as a lifeline, not a trap. Michael Redgrave appears as O'Brien, a senior Party figure Winston believes might be a secret ally. That belief costs him everything. The film was released in 1956, the same year Khrushchev's secret speech began cracking the Soviet myth — Orwell's warning had not aged a day.
