Synopsis

A brief firefight leaves three men in a trench on the strip between the two front lines: one Serb and two Bosnians. The catch is brutal. One Bosnian soldier is pinned on top of a bouncing mine, and the moment anyone lifts him off it, everyone dies. So sworn enemies have to talk. Above them, UN peacekeepers, TV crews and posturing officers turn the standoff into a photo op while the clock runs down. Branko Djuric and Rene Bitorajac trade insults with a near-comic fury.
Tanovic needed nothing but one ditch to skewer the absurdity of the Balkan conflict, no sweeping battles required. His debut took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, beating Amelie to it.
