Synopsis
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) is Lewis Milestone's war drama you can watch online on iFILM. A classroom of German teenagers enlists together, fired up by a teacher who sells them on glory and duty.
The trenches strip that away fast. Paul Bäumer and his friends learn what mud, hunger and a bombardment that drags on for days actually do to a young man, and how the silence afterward can scare you worse than the shelling. Lew Ayres makes Paul age years in the span of weeks. Milestone shot the assaults from a moving camera dolly, a bold choice for battle footage at the time.
Adapted from Erich Maria Remarque's novel, the film keeps its bitter point intact: there is no honor out here, only loss. It won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, among the earliest sound films to do so. Stream All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) online on iFILM.
